Straightforward key collection and drop off. Upon arrival lodge warm, clean and inviting with cosy lighting. The tea, coffee, fresh milk and biscuits provided appreciated after a long drive. Wi-Fi easy to connect to with great signal for several devices. Sonos sound system and TV great. Hot tub perfect temperature for immediate use. A call from the owner, Jay, 48 hours after arrival to check we were happy and if we had any questions. Wood-burner lovely and very efficient! Dishwasher and washing machine really useful (not mentioned on Sykes) A slight hiccup with the hot water and heating midweek. Jay called us back within 20 mins and a switch on and off of the system did the trick. An engineer visit also took place within 2 hours of us raising the issue. It went down again on the Friday, we fixed this ourselves with a switch on/off. With a few repairs and a lick of paint the outdoor areas could look so much better. Sofas and dining chairs have seen better days. Given the size of the lodge more cutlery, crockery and glasses would be useful. A site map in the information pack with opening times of the facilities would be helpful. Unfortunately there was an issue with the swimming pool and this was out of use for the majority of our stay. We appreciate this was no fault of Sykes/Jay and completely out of their control. Something worth shouting about is the claim to fame! Elizabeth Warleggan (Heida Reed) stayed in the lodge during the filming for Poldark. Overall we had a great half term holiday.

The property

Gwel An Mor is a delightful single-storey lodge tucked away in the charming village of Portreath, Cornwall.

Ideal for families or groups of friends, this coastal retreat boasts a relaxing hot tub, a toasty woodburning stove, and is just a short walk from the beach and local amenities.

As you arrive, the crunch of gravel underfoot welcomes you to this stylish, timber-clad lodge.

Climb the steps to the decked terrace and step inside to discover a bright, modern open-plan space combining the kitchen, dining, and lounge areas.

The kitchen features glossy white units, a sleek black worktop, and a central island—perfect for the designated chef to whip up delicious meals.

Once dinner is ready, gather around the dining table, which comfortably seats six, and enjoy good food and great company.

Settle in for a cushy evening on the sofas, watching a film with the warmth of the woodburning stove creating a warm atmosphere.

When it’s time to wind down, choose between a refreshing shower or a relaxing soak in the bath before retreating to one of three inviting bedrooms: a flexible king-size that can be converted into twins, a twin room, and a double—all furnished for a restful night.

In the morning, sip your coffee on the deck, breathe in the sea air, enjoy breakfast alfresco, and unwind in the hot tub after a day of exploring.

From this coastal haven, stroll to Portreath Beach for bodyboarding, sandcastle building, or simply soaking up the sun with an ice cream in hand.

Families will love Paradise Park and JungleBarn Cornwall, where rare birds, a walled garden, and a miniature railway await.

Take a scenic drive to Pendennis Castle, perched on a hilltop with sweeping estuary views, historic cannons, and even jousting events.

About the location

PORTREATH

Truro 14 miles; St Ives 15 miles.

With its sheltered harbour, beautiful Portreath was, in the 1800s, a hive of activity and industry as a major tin-exporting port. Today, the village attracts visitors from around the world with its wild and rugged coastline. High cliffs, secluded coves and sandy, surf-washed beaches typify the area while all around are reminders of the area's rich industrial heritage. Portreath offers a small fishing harbour, shops, a number of pubs, three cafés and a Chinese restaurant, while its safe, sheltered sandy beach is a popular attraction. For a great day out, visit the cathedral city of Truro with its cobbled streets, shopping centre, theatre, museum and great restaurants, just 14 miles away, or travel a few miles along the coast and follow the vast expanse of sandy beach, which leads down to Hayle and on to St Ives. A delightful holiday location.
