Very Disappointed, Stayed in Quirrels Nest, worst lodge we have ever stayed in.
First impressions, nice, but once you look around the lodge all you see is dust, cobwebs, floor not swept, utensils all dirty, had to wash before use. Hot tub, well what a disappointment, didn't know had to use wood burners to keep hot, really! Which you have to buy! Smell in hot tub as not cleaned by owner daily. This is a standard process with hot tubs, should be cleaned first thing each morning. Windows really dirty, very dusty, cobwebs, owner not hands on, not really bothered. If customers complain about something on the day it should be sorted quickly, we were told, we be looked at the next day. We came for my sisters 50th and for a break after losing our father recently, all I can say is I was so disappointed I wanted to leave, but unfortunately once we were there, there was nothing I could do. Stayed in many lodges, some even cheaper but they have never been this bad. Warning, you pay extra for logs to use for hot tub and fire pit £20 each time for basket of wood, cheaper to go for walk and pick up wood peices yourself. Never know to use wood to use hot tub, plus took ages to heat up, you waste so much time, trying to sort it, that it gets so annoying. Group of 4, only 3 dining chairs? 2 towels? Had air fryer in lodge so dusty and disgusting and stored on top of the fridge, which you had to climb on chair to get down, only to see it was disgusting and we couldn't use it, very unclean, don't waste your money here, it ruined our break and after awhile we just wanted to come home
This lodge was perfect for our family of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids) for exploring the area for a few days.
The location is great and we particularly enjoyed a walk / ride to The Fox pub for dinner one night. It was a short car journey to Rutland and in easy reach of lots of other pubs. The owners are very friendly and extremely responsive to messages when we were on site. We particularly appreciated the owners bringing us a goal when they saw that our boys were football fans! The hot tub was great and stayed really hot. We were there at the end of season (late August) and I think we did feel that - the place was surface clean but very much in need of a deep clean (cobwebs, dirty windows and mismatched crockery). There are several lodges on site and this place would be great for a couple of families wanting to holiday together but also wanting their own space! A welcome pack (milk / bread / biscuits) would have been most welcomed - but shops are not too far away. A final flag for future guests is that there is zero phone signal - absolutely fine once you’re on WiFi but problematic when we needed to ring the owners when we arrived. Thankfully the staff at the on site cafe (a different business) were very helpful.

The cleanliness was shocking for what you pay. The windows were filthy there was cobwebs everywhere and dust on all kitchen appliances they needed a good wash to use them. The hot tub was broken but the owner came down and sorted it that evening. The bathroom looked like it had not been cleaned from the previous occupants. I think if the owners spent the time to inspect after the cleaners had been in and paid a bit more attention to detail we would definitely return but we are not willing to pay over £600 for 3 night to clean before we cook and use the facility.
