Brookbank Folly fulfilled all our hopes for it.

It is a quirky and very quiet place in deep countryside, just the place to chill out. It is very comfortable, and our hosts Richard and Sue were very caring and attentive, without in any way imposing themselves. One minor point re the Sykes listing - there is no DVD player. This was not a problem for us, especially in the second week of Wimbledon!

Lovely bespoke hideaway surrounded by the forest making it so peaceful.

Exactly as advertised, we wouldn’t hesitate to book again when next in the area. Close to local places of interest and attractions. Hosts Richard and Sue were friendly and helpful without been intrusive and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. This definitely is a place to get away from everyday life.

Selfmade bij the owner, but very complete equipped. Very friendly owners life also on the property, but not in sight. Dog Audrey visites once a day.

Our stay at the lodge was truly wonderful.

It’s a beautiful, tranquil, and delightful place — the kind of setting that instantly makes you feel relaxed and at ease. The surroundings were peaceful, and the lodge itself had such a charming atmosphere. The hosts were incredibly friendly and welcoming. They made us feel well looked after from the moment we arrived and were contactable if we needed anything at all.

very well equipped. Beautiful garden surrounding it, a lovely dog who came to visit, but if you dont like dogs the owner will keep them in. Richard and Sue were helpful but didn't bother us while we were there, but they were on hand if we needed anything. They left us some milk, wine, crisps, biscuits and some cereal packs which we didn't use (except the milk). we brought everything with us that we would need. The folly is quirky, beautifully decorated and maintained. nothing at all wrong but everything to love. wish we had booked for a few more days. peaceful retreat for a weekend

Quaint and practical home situated perfectly close by to popular attractions / landmarks.

Facilities catered for our needs and the owners were amazing and were always contactable to help with any enquiries we had. Felt very welcomed when arriving! Perfect retreat for a couples getaway for some R&R and peace and quiet. Highly recommended! Due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to cut short our stay as my partner was required to attend an emergency Hospital appointment. Would love to come back again so as to complete our sightseeing of the beautiful surroundings!

Beautiful little house in a peaceful area.

We used it as a base to visit nearby historical sites. The accommodation had everything we could possibly need. Lots of thought from the owners had gone into providing a very comfortable stay.

We really appreciated Richard's generous welcome, and his ingenious and unique cottage; it's a lovely, quiet setting which sparks one's imagination!

Very peaceful and the folly is well equipped and comfortable. It backs onto the forest and within minutes you can be in the woods. The owners are absolutely lovely and always leave a welcome pack on arrival which is a very nice touch and shows they care that you have a great time. Would recommend to any couples who want to get away from the hustle bustle of life...............

Brookbank Folly is an absolute gem.

It is cosy, comfortable and a great base from which to explore. The bed and sofa are both extremely comfortable, coupled with the silence and zero light pollution it was easy to relax and get a great night's sleep. The garden is a suntrap and I loved sitting out listening to the birds. Richard and Sue are friendly but not intrusive and I loved the daily visits from Audrey one of their dogs. Fresh milk and a welcome hamper upon arrival, as well as local pub recommations and a basket of leaflets giving info on attractions and walking routes was a nice touch. You can go for a wander in the woods behind Brookbank Cottage & Folly and you can go the long way to St Anthony's well, walk down the road. A couple of things to be aware of; Jubilee Road is single track and tarmacked, but if you turn right out of the gate and contine along to Spout Lane it turns into an extremely rutted, quite narrow track with one quite deep hole. Would recommend using Jubilee Road if you have a small car that wouldn't cope with that type of terrain. Wi-fi is good but there is little to no phone signal and the fridge has a tiny icebox which doesn't hold much more than an ice cube tray. The tv has streaming services which you will need to log into - a bonus when you want to relax after a long day of exploring! Brookbank Folly - a total delight and I'd love to go back!

Perfect little hobbit house, everything was well thought out, nothing was missing, on the contrary, it was perfectly equipped.

well what can we say, on first seeing the cottage as we arrived and then opening the door and entering, it took our breath away!

, it was amazing so much better in reality than the pictures on line, the owners were first class and extremely helpful, even the sat nav took us straight to the gate!, the cottage was lovely and comfortable, so quirky, really quiet well except wildlife, an occasional car or tractor, everything you need was readily available, sharp knives to all your pots and pans and bathroom stocked with soaps and shampoo, oh and the milk and biscuits was welcomed, biscuits were lovelly and well received, so much to see and do, the Farmers Boy Inn, do the best Sunday roast, it was the best place to go for our week of respite as we care for two of our Grandchildren at 15 and 12, we sometimes need a break lol, love you really kids lol, ideal place to unwind and chill, will we be going back?, oh yes we most certainly will.

Fab base to see surrounding sites, cottage is in secluded location, owners are friendly, left a lovely welcome tray of goodies, building deceptive as looks small at the front but goes back under trees and bushes and is spacious and packed with every thing can need for a week or two.

There are a few low areas those over 6ft may need to bend down for. Cottage is cool in temperature, which is lovely. There are heaters on timers and electric blankets on bed, these I personally feel are needed to take the dampness out of the air/ bedroom, as I was not expecting to need in July. Over all Great value for money.

This is an absolutely amazing Hobbit House it is full of everything you will need for a most comfortable stay I can’t say how beautiful and wonderful the whole property is , the bed and pillows are super comfortable the kitchen is equipped with everything you will need and the bathroom is warm and luxurious a super hot strong shower…bliss!

The lounge is pretty and comfortable full of extras , games books and a great TV , internet is strong always and the cute shaped windows are just an added extra to make this cottage truly spectacular. A large and well thought out tray of goodies on arrival is so lovely, wine cereal marmalade biscuits crisps all of very high quality. Even gave us milk to start us off! The host is warm and kind and you get the feeling he would help you with anything if needed. We will and are already planning many returns. Thank you Brookbank Cottage for a great stay we love you lol

We had a great stay.

From the moment we saw Brookbank Folly, we were enchanted. Inside, it was really roomy and comfortable. The owners had equipped it with everything you could possibly need. There was also a good selection of books to read and games to play, plus the usual leaflets on local eateries and places to visit. On our arrival, there were flowers, milk, and a selection of goodies to enjoy. Overall, we were very pleased with Brookbank Folly.

Cute little cottage in a peaceful area.

The owners were knowledgeable about things to do out and about, there’s was also a handy notebook in the property which they had written local places to eat that offered good food. They had thought of everything, there was also a welcome hamper on the table which included a nice bottle of wine, biscuits and preserves. Although you are within the owners garden it was sectioned off so that it was private to you and they were very respectful of our privacy. Audrey, their dog, made the occasional visit, they had checked beforehand that we would be ok with this, she was a very good girl and would only come over the doorstep if invited.

A very lovely cottage in a rural setting.

The host was very welcoming. We were happy to spend time at the cottage but it was a very good base for exploring Gloucester and the Forest of Dean also. A nice welcome pack was a lovely treat. A very cozy couples retreat.

This cottage is gorgeous and perfect for that quiet getaway.

Just one thing that needs to be pointed out in case it is vital to some. The Shower is poor unfortunately. It takes a while to get showered and rinsed. But other than that I cannot praise it enough. And the couple that own it are very helpful if you need anything. And the welcome basket was a very nice touch.

It’s wonderfully quirky, but also very well thought out. It was warm, comfortable and cosy. The kitchen, though small was very well equipped. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and really appreciated how much effort had been put in to the little personal touches that made our break really special.

I spent 2 nights in this stunning & quirky cottage & I immediately felt at home.

It was so comfortable & warm & I had a great night's sleep in the bed; as it was extremely comfortable. I loved the environment & the nature all around. The owls at night, the Robin Redbreasts sitting the window ledge, looking in at me & the mole holes were also really unusual to see. The walks in the area were stunning & I would definitely recommend this very cute cottage for a weekend break away.

We picked this folly for its quirkiness and it definitely delivered.

If you want to stay somewhere completely different this is the place. Even though the weather wasn't fantastic we still had a relaxing and comfortable time. Loads of places to go in the area unfortunately it was too wet to go walking in the forest. We would love to stay again

A lovely, cozy, home away from home.

The Folly was absolutely stunning, well heated, and very clean! It also had everything we needed for a 4-night stay, especially with the kind welcome surprise of milk, tea and coffee bags, a bottle of wine and a few other bits. As it was our first time in the area, we weren’t entirely sure about where to go or what it would be like there. The owners were really welcoming and helpful, with a range of pamphlets, books and maps available for us to look through and decide where to go or what to do. I would definitely book again!

Quite simply WOW.

..a delightful, quirky cottage. So cosy and with everything you could possibly need. We felt so relaxed and chilled after our short stay here, watching the birds by day, and listening to the owls at night. We didn't want to leave, and can't wait to return.

We were both very pleased with this cottage- we have been in many cottages over the past few years and this was well up with he best of them.

This is a fantastic property and the owners are friendly and helpful.

Accurate description and the photos don't do it justice. It is immaculately clean and tidy. It's very well equipped, everything has been thought of from egg cups to an umbrella! The bed is so comfortable I even asked the owners where they bought it! The area is very secluded and as I was looking for peace and privacy it was perfect. Apart from visits by the owners two friendly dogs I was left in splendid isolation. Will definitely look to return when I can.

It was just as it looked.

Everything that could make our stay pleasant and restful was done, wi fi, hot water and peace and quiet. It was clean, comfortable and quirky, we were still sending pictures to friends at the end of the week. A most enjoyable holiday. A lovely cottage in beautiful area.

The details said easy access to forest but only access we saw was totally overgrown.

Lovely people who were happy to help and brilliant quirky cottage/folly. Wouldn’t recommend for anyone who has mobility problems but a great stay for us.

What a lovely place! Very tranquil and relaxing. We really enjoyed exploring the area and even managed to see wild boar, which was amazing. We also loved our daily visits from Audrey & Klara, the owner’s dogs. Definitely will be back!

It’s situated in the perfect location if your wanting peace and quiet. Upon arrival, we were greeted very warmly by the lovely owners and instantly felt safe and welcomed. Will certainly be returning.

Brookbank Folly is all of these things and more. It's location is stunning, and is perfect for local walks. The incredibly welcoming owner greeted us with a lovely welcome pack as well, and the cottage was kindly stocked with teas and coffee. So very generous. Can't recommend it highly enough!

Well what can I say?

!.... This has got to be the most tranquil, peaceful, relaxing and unusual property I have ever holidayed in. Amazing surroundings with beautiful bird song. Very private location for us and the property owners. The Forest of Dean and Wye Valley are so incredibly beautiful that I genuinely want to move there. Thank you to Richard and his wife for sharing their 'hobbit house ' for us all to enjoy.

Brookbank Folly has been so thoughtfully designed and equipped and the owners were really welcoming and helpful. The goodies and flowers were much appreciated. The cottage is a gem and definitely the most interesting and delightful one we’ve stayed in. A perfect place to relax and unwind after a day exploring this stunning part of the country.

Brookbank Folly is a wonderful Hobbit house of high quality and attention to detail.

Very comfortable in every way with high quality items left for our use. Lovely large China mugs for the tea and real coffee bags provided. John Freida shampoo and conditioner among other items in the warm and spacious bathroom. Individual electric blankets in the comfortable double bed. The welcome basket of goodies included milk, wine, cereals and delicious dark chocolate ginger biscuits and a lovely large vase of flowers which were still going strong after our weeks stay. We have already shared information about this secluded gem of a cottage with friends and we certainly hope to return .The Forest of Dean is a treasure of a national forest park with Brookbank as it's hidden jewel. Thank you Richard and Sue we had a marvellous time!

Everything was just right - the house was exceptionally well-equipped, from the lovely and generous toiletries to the excellent kitchen equipment, with good pans, glasses and crockery, and sharp knives.

The generous welcome package, including a pint of milk, was a lovely additional touch. The bed and the sofa were comfortable, and the garden was lovely, with many additional thoughtful elements - a bench and table, and garden chairs. The property is secluded and private, and a perfect place for a restful weekend away. Thank you. We loved it.

Delightfully quirky cottage, yet warm and comfortable.

The kitchen has been equipped very thoughtfully, with plenty of nice crockery and lots of useful items that are often not found in a holiday cottage. Good quality saucepans, again slightly unusual in a holday cottage! The fridge is small but adequate, but has a very small freezing compartment. Owners are very welcoming. Only problem is the tiny parking space which takes quite a bit of manoeuvering to get into.

Very relaxing long weekend with every amenity catered for.

The cottage was lovely, it's location is beautiful and the whole place felt warm and welcoming.

There was no extra single bed.

Not suitable for older people, as the floors were sloping and the bed was not level. Hob needs replacing as did not heat up well or go red. All markings for the hotplates had been rubbed off. Microwave needed a instruction leaflet. Crockery especially bowels needed to be increased in amount, only 2 large provided. Very small fridge, leaked at times because dial had moved. Sofa sagging on one side. Owner very welcoming, lovely hospitality box left for us.

Beautiful cottage.

The photos did not do it justice. It is so warm and cosy inside, also cool when the weather was in the 80s during our stay. The kitchen was very well equipped and the toiletries provided were lovely. The garden was beautiful and private. This cottage is well situated for visiting local beauty spots and long walks in the Forest. The owners are lovely and very helpful. the two dogs are so much fun. A fantastic place for a break.

Little bit far out of the village, you could not walk to the pubs. But everything else was great, owners super friendly and helpful, 2 beautiful dogs

Sue and Richard were the most hospitable of hosts.

We were greeted with a basket of goodies and nothing was too much rouble. Richard even gave us a lift when we had broken down. The cottage was such an inviting and quite luxurious space, where we very quickly settled. The location was beautiful, and a quite retreat that was just what we needed. I've never slept so well away from home. We will be returning as soon as possible.

Nice friendly people, nice not having WiFi but annoying sometimes when you feel like going out somewhere for the day and need to book up online to require tickets.

You probably will say why you didn’t you book up these events before you come away but all things you like doing is weather permitting. Fortunately weather was perfect every day. Peaceful and relaxing surroundings.

.. The perfect getaway

There was dead flys everywhere, all the cutlery needed cleaning due to them having dead flys and dust covering them.

We needed to vacuum the floor, the cottage was covered in cob webs and dead spiders, loose floor tiles, I would not recommend this cottage, especially considering it is in the owners garden, which is something you have failed to mention on your website.

A beautiful, quirky cottage in amazing surroundings.

This is a quirky but fun place to stay.

The cottage is only 8 eight years old but has been made to look (very successfully!) a hundred years old. It was comfortable with most of the modern facilities you could wish for although we found the fridge a little small and we could not find (probably our fault) a cheese grater. The setting is idyllic and very peaceful.

I had an amazing break at Brookbank Folly-just what was needed!

The owners were very discreet but available if needed. I do think a note to say there are dogs that do visit the garden from time to time as though I do adore animals, to be advised in advance would have been good. The location is perfect being only a few miles from the town. The forest walks are on the doorstep & are fabulous. Thank you

Booking through Sykes was a very smooth and simple process.

Contacting the owner was straightforward. The owner was friendly, polite and helpful, and the bottle of wine and other goodies on arrival was a nice touch, as were the Christmas decorations. The cottage was clean, comfortable and adorably quirky, and tea, coffee, soap, towels, etc were all provided, almost like a hotel. Plenty of heating was available so it was nice and warm. There are local shops for essentials, and a petrol station. No internet/wifi and next to no mobile signal meant we were out of contact (very peaceful once you are used to it!); and probably due to bad weather, there was some variable reception on some tv channels. The folly is down a long narrow track on the side of a hill, in a secluded part of the owner's garden. Accessibility: There is a narrow gravel path down a slope from the car park space then up to the property, probably 20-30 yards, and in all there are then four steps up when you get there. Low doorways in places so taller people need to stoop to avoid headaches. Quite a narrow gate on the way in, might be a squeeze with a big car. The owner has a couple of friendly dogs who come and say hello now and again. Mitcheldean and other local towns are pretty ordinary, but the property is very close to the Forest of Dean.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this 'hobbit house' looked small from outside but like the tardis it was big inside!

So warm and comfortable and everything was provided, and as it was our first self catering holiday it was so good. Slept very well and feel so much better for our holiday in the Forest of Dean. All places that we wanted to see were all within the place range, so easy to travel to and return to "our home" each day. We used our sat nav to get us there but reading instructions of how to get there we didn't see 'Rank Xerox' building and according to Richard it has been closed for about 9 years and is just used as small business. Ian used to work for rank xerox!

to advise all visitors to take a pair of slippers or soft shoes as 90% of floors are ceramic tiled

Brookbank Folly is the most amazing, quirky little place we have ever seen.

Real little "Hobbit " house in the most wonderful location. Folly was very warm and cosy and very well equipped, even had electric blanket on the bed. Owner met us on arrival and went through all the relevant details with us. Felt like we were in a fairy tale the whole time we were there. Garden area is so still and calm, all you can hear are the birds singing. Anyone who likes gorgeous quirky little places with peace and quiet will adore this little place like we did. Love it.

The cottage exceeded expectations.

The owners were extremely friendly but discrete. Everything you thought you wanted was available and even things you didn't know you wanted was provided. I would recommend to family and friends. A successful holiday. Yes, we would use Sykes again. Thank you.

It was all we imagined it to be and more.

Wonderful little cottage.

Peaceful and relaxing break on the edge of the magical forest of Dean. No phone signal or WiFi but that to us was a bonus. So many places to explore nearby. Owner very friendly and helpful. We would highly recommend this little folly for a stress free break.

The Folly would benefit from a new mattress my wife had to sleep on the settee and I never got a good night sleep.

We were informed that the property had had a water leak in the cupboard in the bedroom. This was treated by a heater not a dehumidified. The whole folly smelt mouldy and damp. We were very disappointed with the general state of the folly a renovation is needed particular with the floor tiles and the creeping damp in areas of the folly The outside could do with a uplift. We may have been unfortunate and arrived at the wrong time?

We had a brilliant time staying in the folly in December.

They had a lot of snow - 1 foot deep so we got our car snowed in and had to walk everywhere! It was magical. The hosts were extremely helpful and kind and helped us to get up the track back to the main road when we were leaving as the ice was terrible. The only thing I would say is there is no WiFi and our mobile phone signal was rubbish, so we had no access to the internet.

We had a great stay at the Folly and found it peaceful and restful.

It's a good place to use as a base for the Forest of Dean, down a narrow lane but easy enough to negotiate. Michael and his wife Sue were welcoming and we had a guided tour of our cute little home for the week. This is a unique property and it's our intention to go back in warmer weather, there is so much to see in this area and offers plenty of choice for everyone.

With it being winter, it was lovely to come back to the warmth of the cottage from a long day exploring the area and the Forest of Dean.

This is an idyllic retreat snuggled into a wooded hillside with lots of delightful design details and everything carefully thought out.

From the cottage, there are a lot of walks in the surrounding woodlands and other interesting places to visit. With Asda doing a home delivery, you don't need to go near towns and with very intermittent mobile signal, it really is a get away from it all location.

This is an 'Escape Location Rental'.

The entrance via Jubilee Road is single lane and requires care negotiating. TV OK, no Wi-Fi and not great phone coverage (3 & Vodaphone). If you bring food (Not frozen - no deep freeze) for the period of the rental and some good books you could stay the in the cottage. Locally there is a small Co-Op in Mitcheldean and a large one in Cinderford. It would be a shame to stay in since the location on the north east corner of Forest of Dean is perfect for exploring the forest. It is also a good location for sight seeing along the river Wye or along the Severn.
