The accommodation is, of course, in the lower price range.

But I definitely didn’t expect to have to empty the toilet myself. You have to put your hand inside the toilet to open a flap. When removing the compost bag, urine from the previous user dripped onto my hand… I’ve used compost toilets elsewhere, but those were designed much more elegantly — for example with sawdust and a container that could be removed from the outside.

We had a wonderful stay at the shepherds hut.

Beautiful, peaceful and idyllic location to switch off. Wonderful hiking trails a short distance away.

The hut looked clean and the beds were nicely made up with clean bedding.

The hosts left fresh farm milk, croissants and marshmallows. The beds were warm and comfortable. We arrived after dark and soon noticed the hut was full of flies and ladybugs. The toilet was split into two containers. The front for liquids and the back with a sliding lid and a bag for solids. Although the description said 'compost toilet', it didn't explicitly state what this meant in practice - going to the toilet throughout the weekend without cleaning it out. It also relied on being very accurate with your aim! The next day there were even more flies and ladybugs. There was no hot water, so we couldn't shower. We were also visited by three large spiders and there was one that seemed to have a well established home in the sink overflow. The outside shelter looked robust and a strong, however with one gust of wind we realised it wasn't tied down, as it lifted up and moved. The outside space was not safe, so we spent the afternoon inside the hut - with the flies and ladybugs. By 15:30 on Saturday, less than 24 hours after our arrival we decided to leave. The hosts did come out to fix the hot water, however it was just as we were leaving and by that point the hot water had started working. We think it was something to do with the power. The deal breaker was the toilet. Had it been described better, I wouldn't have booked it. The flies, ladybugs and spiders are perhaps acceptable however not at the level we witnessed. I expect glamping accommodation to be regularly fumagated to prevent infestations like this. I have photos and videos to support my claims.
